The wildfire smoke cleared and the sky was blue along the Crooked River drainage for the Eagle Rock/Sanford Creek mule deer winter range protection volunteer work day. Thanks and congratulations go out to all of you, the Prineville BLM staff/volunteers, the Mule Deer Foundation and Oregon Hunters Association – Ochoco Chapter volunteers that were on hand to accomplish the long-awaited project intended to protect our wintering mule deer in the region.

In the MDF Volunteer Spotlight segment the Mule Deer Foundation would like to call attention to a specific MDF volunteer, and bring their efforts to the forefront of our messaging. These volunteers are pivotal to the Mule Deer Foundation accomplishing our mission and it’s important that we recognize them as often as we can.
The Mule Deer Foundation is working with USFS on public land to improve Mule Deer habitat. The East Deer-Lodge Valley Landscape project has been ongoing for 10 years and wraps up this September. The total management area is 47,000 acres. The project area is 40,000 acres.
In June 2024, the Mule Deer Foundations conservation staff began a multi-partner and multi-state project to address fence entanglement concerns for mule deer migrating between Idaho and Utah.
