Conservation takes many forms and MDF Magazine is critical to sharing the work that we do.

MDF Magazine is a quarterly publication, and exclusive to Mule Deer Foundation members. Packed full of high quality stories and striking photography of the work that we are doing on the ground, in a perfect bound, glossy top-scale paper perfect for reading in the wall tent, or the waiting room. We are excited to celebrate the content between the covers, with an aesthetically pleasing and easily readable layout.

MDF Magazine continues to deliver stories from the hunt, as well as in the field highlighting conservation challenges and projects. Cuisine, state-by-state updates on the work happening across the range, mule deer and black-tailed deer biology and more!

The magazine features some of the best hunting stories, tips, and tactics from our friends Jana Waller of Skullbound Chronicles, Mark Kayser, Jason Matzinger, Identical Draw and more!

Celebration of the success of our members, is a fan favorites section, and is featured in each and every issue! This is our favorite section to put together, as we get to share in your stories.

With an increased page count and reduction in ads, MDF Members can enjoy a magazine that delivers the MDF mission, facilitates our mission, and showcases those supporters committed to what we do.

This encounter marked the first documented scientific description of the mule deer by Euro-American explorers. While Indigenous peoples across the American West had hunted and lived alongside mule deer for centuries, the Lewis and Clark journals provided the first written account of the species for the expanding field of American zoology. This documentation description would continue throughout the journey as more of these creatures were brought in, and Lewis would later start referring to them as mule deer. That's how they came to be known by the name we know them by today.

Our recent blog post by @fongeinthefield goes out Our recent blog post by @fongeinthefield goes out to all the fly anglers and fly tiers out there! 🎣🪶

When our hunt is successful, we naturally focus on salvaging every bit of meat—but what about the hair? Game hair from pronghorns, mule deer, or elk can be amazing natural material for tying effective and unique fly patterns. Whether you’re a seasoned fly tier or know someone who is, this resource is definitely worth collecting.

From delicate Hopper Patterns to the classic Elk Hair Caddis, and the soft Comparadun to the buoyant Goddard Caddis, Cody breaks down how to use harvested game hair to craft flies that help you connect with trout on a whole new level.

Next time you’re out, toss a Ziploc in your kit and collect some hair—you’ll be amazed at how meaningful it feels to catch fish with flies tied from your own harvest.

North Dakota has announced its 2025 deer season wi North Dakota has announced its 2025 deer season with 7,800 fewer licenses than last year. The drop reflects an ongoing effort to help the state’s deer population recover after disease, harsh winters, and continued habitat loss.

CRP acreage continues to decline, mule deer numbers are down despite mild winters, and wildlife managers are trying to strike a balance between opportunity and conservation.

If you hunt in North Dakota—or care about the future of deer and habitat across the West—this update is worth your attention.
