Conservation takes many forms and MDF Magazine is critical to sharing the work that we do.

MDF Magazine is a quarterly publication, and exclusive to Mule Deer Foundation members. Packed full of high quality stories and striking photography of the work that we are doing on the ground, in a perfect bound, glossy top-scale paper perfect for reading in the wall tent, or the waiting room. We are excited to celebrate the content between the covers, with an aesthetically pleasing and easily readable layout.

MDF Magazine continues to deliver stories from the hunt, as well as in the field highlighting conservation challenges and projects. Cuisine, state-by-state updates on the work happening across the range, mule deer and black-tailed deer biology and more!

The magazine features some of the best hunting stories, tips, and tactics from our friends Jana Waller of Skullbound Chronicles, Mark Kayser, Jason Matzinger, Identical Draw and more!

Celebration of the success of our members, is a fan favorites section, and is featured in each and every issue! This is our favorite section to put together, as we get to share in your stories.

With an increased page count and reduction in ads, MDF Members can enjoy a magazine that delivers the MDF mission, facilitates our mission, and showcases those supporters committed to what we do.

Hunting deep in the backcountry with nothing but the gear you can carry on your back is one of the most rewarding ways to access wild, hard-to-reach mule deer country. It’s an adventure rooted in self-reliance, and while it can open the door to areas few others reach, it also adds a layer of complexity you won’t find when hunting from a truck or a traditional base camp.

In this article, we break down the Mule Deer Foundation’s recommended backcountry gear list — including tips and specific product suggestions — to help you prepare for your next hunt.

Bowhunting mule deer in open country is one of the most  rewarding — and frustrating — challenges a Western hunter can take on. There’s no treestand to sit in, no food plot to watch. It’s you, the sagebrush, the sun, and a buck that can pick you off at 400 yards if you blink wrong.

Ask a dozen mule deer hunters how they get it done, and you’ll hear two main camps: spot-and-stalk and ambush hunting. Both get the job done — but they take different mindsets, skills, and situations to pull off. Let’s break ‘em down.

We’re excited to announce the upcoming release of a new three-part short video series entitled “On Location: Crossroads Project,” highlighting a recent project within our long-term partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. For nearly four decades, the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) has worked in tandem with the USDA Forest Service to develop innovative and partnership-driven approaches to active forest management that enhance wildlife habitat for big game species, such as mule deer and black-tailed deer. These approaches also help make these landscapes and communities across the Western U.S. more resilient to future wildfires.

This new chapter means more boots on the ground, more habitat projects, and a stronger community of hunters, land stewards, and wildlife enthusiasts working together for deer conservation right here at home.

If you’re in the area and passionate about protecting deer and the places they roam, now’s the perfect time to get involved. Volunteer, connect with fellow outdoorsmen and women, and help shape the future of deer conservation in Cassia County. We'd like to thank regional RD, Barry Crose, Chapter Chairman, Chris Rodgers and Vice Chairman, Hunter Snooks for their efforts in establishing this chapter!
