Empowering Chapters

Chapter Rewards funds could be used by Chapters, MDF Partners, or MDF Staff to support conservation projects that help contribute to the MDF mission. Chapter involvement in identifying potential projects, developing proposals, and assisting with implementation is a key part of the success of MDF at the local level. These Chapter projects are also a great way to publicize MDF’s conservation efforts to members, the public, and MDF conservation partners.

Collaborative Proposal

Proposals for the use of Chapter Rewards program funding should be developed in coordination with MDF Regional Directors, MDF Conservation staff, State Chairs, and chapter committees to ensure that proposals support the MDF mission at the local, regional, or national level and across the range of mule deer and black-tailed deer. We have developed Program Guidelines to clarify how the Chapter Rewards program works and things to keep in mind when developing and submitting a project proposal.

Using Turkey Season to Prep for Your Western Hunt

At first glance, the idea of using turkey season to prepare for a Western hunt sounds odd. After all, when we think of heading West, it’s usually for mule deer or elk—not turkeys. But the truth is, turkey hunting hones many of the same critical skills needed for a successful DIY or public land hunt out West. The overlap is greater than you might think, from physical conditioning to woodsmanship.

The Role of Hunters and Local Observers: Supporting Sustainable Mule Deer Populations

Mule deer are one of the most iconic species of the American West. Their presence in sagebrush flats, high desert draws, and mountain ridges is a living reminder of the wilderness we strive to protect. But healthy mule deer populations don’t happen by accident, they require careful management, ethical hunting practices, and the keen eyes of local observers.

Tag Soup Stories and What They Teach Us

Every hunter has a version of it. Gun misfired, missed a shot, waiting to long to shoot, things just happen. The tag stays in your pocket, the freezer stays empty, and the lessons stick around a whole lot longer than any set of antlers ever would.
