Coloradans Vote Down Ban on Big Cat Hunting in big win for Conservation!

Prop 127 Defeated!!!!!!!

Prop 127 in the State of Colorado, a ballot measure hotly contested by conservation organizations across the nation attempting to ban mountain lion and bobcat hunting in Colorado has been struck down. Colorado voters split along urban/rural lines like much of the nation in last nights elections.

The proposed ban passed in only a few urban areas while voters in rural counties voted in favor of science driven wildlife management.

“Proposition 127 is a dangerous ballot measure that intends to prohibit the hunting of mountain lions and bobcats in Colorado. It is a blatant attempt to undermine the authority of Colorado Parks & Wildlife, which has utilized regulated hunting as an effective tool to manage the state’s wildlife populations for decades. ” – Mule Deer Foundation article on prop 127

When all votes were tallied over 55% of Colorado voters cast ballots against Prop 127.

“Coloradans stood up for science and sound wildlife management by voting against Proposition 127,” Dan Gates, chairman of the opposition group Colorado Wildlife Deserves Better, said in a statement Wednesday morning. “This result reflects the voices of those who recognize the importance of letting wildlife experts, not the ballot box, guide decisions on the conservation of Colorado’s big cats.”

Congratulations to Colorado hunters, anglers, and conservationists, and congratulations to the greater conservation community. The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is under threat everyday by those who refuse to acknowledge its success or understand the science behind it. Yesterday in Colorado hunters across the state showed up to vote and make sure they are doing their part in the fight for conservation. Thank you to everyone who voted!
