ANNOUNCING MULE DEER HABITAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!

September 14, 2024 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

MDF/Prineville BLM Volunteer Fencing Work Party

Why You Should Want to Attend:

The Mule Deer Foundation is excited to announce a project focused on ensuring the conservation of Mule Deer Habitat in Oregon. We are seeking 15 volunteer conservationists to help us install a 100-yard ghost fence and gate that will help the enforce the seasonal motorized winter range closure in place to protect wintering mule deer. These stewardship events are designed to support the local Mule Deer herds we all enjoy.

 What is it:

The Mule Deer Foundation has partnered with the BLM and Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife on the Sanford Creek and Eagle Rock Winter Range Habitat Restoration Project. This MDF sponsored work event is at the tip of the Eagle Creek & Sanford – Juniper Reduction Project Area we are cooperating with BLM & ODFW and starting this late fall.  We have committed $100,000 and will treat (slash and pile) up to 1,000 acres of Juniper this fall/winter/spring!

For this work event volunteers will help install a 100-yard ghost fence and gate that will help the enforce the seasonal motorized winter range closure in place to protect wintering mule deer.

Work will include pounding in metal t-posts, rolling out three strands of smooth wire, clipping the wire at the appropriate height, digging post holes, installing H-braces or rock jacks, and installing a powder river gate. Additionally, we will be removing ¼ – ½ mile of derelict fence that could entangle wildlife.

  • Long sleeve clothing, pants and hiking boots are recommended.
  • BLM personnel will be available with all the needed equipment.
  • Work gloves, hearing protection and a “MDF Swag Bag” will be provided to each volunteer.
  • Dispersed camping at the site (no facilities) or reservations can be made at Prineville Res. State Park.
  • (MDF coordinator, Ryan Krapp, will be camping onsite Friday and Saturday nights)
  • Field trip of the project area will occur on Friday afternoon and on Saturday.
  • Please be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and any extra food or snacks that you think you might need.
