The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) and Arizona Game & Fish Department (AGFD) have created a Cooperative Mule Deer Biologist position to be located at the AGFD Headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. The position will be hired by the Mule Deer Foundation and will work day to day under the supervision of AGFD.
Duties: primary tasks will include: 1) completing statewide inventory of wildlife water developments and assessment of future needs/opportunities. 2) developing volunteer capacity for maintaining water developments statewide, 3) identifying opportunities for deer habitat enhancement projects on AGFD wildlife areas, and 4) identifying stewardship contract opportunities that MDF can pursue. The position will have a 60-40 office:field ratio, but that may vary based on season.
The individual will be a MDF employee and all benefits, worker’s compensation, insurance etc. will be handle by MDF. AGFD will be responsible for the day to day supervision, task assignments and performance evaluations. The individual will also work closely with the MDF Arizona Regional Director and MDF Volunteers.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A general qualification guideline for this position is a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Biology, Range Management, Forestry or other Natural Resource discipline and 3 plus years professional experience.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with landowners and partner agencies.
Knowledge of range science and wildlife ecology including the ability to develop habitat project plans that include wildlife habitat management objectives.
Must be able to synthesize and balance needs of mule deer and other conservation opportunities.
Expertise in mule deer biology and management.
Knowledge of Southwest flora and fauna communities.
Position requires working in remote/rugged desert areas, successful applicant needs to be willing to work alone in inclement weather and adverse conditions.
Must be a self‐starter who can work independently.
Must be willing and able to perform administrative work in a controlled environment/office setting for an eight‐hour workday.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Access and GIS mapping software.
Excellent verbal/written skills.
Position will start after July 1, 2017. The position is a time limited position. MDF provides a benefits package that includes, health insurance, 401K.
