Fourth Annual Radium State Wildlife Area (SWA) Work Weekend

Radium State Wildlife Area near Kremmling, Colo.
HENDERSON, Colo. – The fourth annual Radium State Wildlife Area (SWA) work weekend is tentatively scheduled for June 4-6, 2010. Please mark your calendars.
For those who have participated in the past, it is “more of the same.” We’ll be working under the direction of Colorado Division of Wildlife to remove pinion and juniper trees on the Radium SWA. The Radium State Wildlife area is 18,000+ acres located along the Colorado River approximately 12 miles southwest of Kremmling.
This is an area that winters mule deer, elk, and big horn sheep (sheep were introduced to this area in 2009). The goal is to remove trees to allow return of grasses, forbs, shrubs, bitter brush, etc. for the benefit of big game species.
The plan is for many of us to arrive Friday afternoon and evening to set up “base camp.” Work will take place Saturday and Sunday mornings. We will also be planning to install a marker in memory of Henry Funkner.
Although the tree cutting work can be physical, there are many other jobs and tasks that are not so physical in nature that you can assist and participate in if you are interested. Plus, it is an enjoyable weekend to spend with fellow volunteers to perform some “hands on” habitat improvements/restoration.
Chapter leads – please provide this info to anyone interested in helping. If you are planning to participate, please send me an e-mail so I can begin coordination and planning efforts.
Stay tuned for more details as time approaches. You may also call me directly at 720-261-6232 or e-mail shampel@muledeer.org if you are not familiar with this effort.
